History

The club, whose name literally translates as " Gymnastics and Fencing ", was founded on June 3, 1887 . Initially, these types of sports were cultivated in a team, subsequently football , rugby , basketball and others were added to them.

"Gimnasia" - champion of Argentina 1929

At the beginning of the 20th century , Khimnasia was a participant in 3 divisions, along with River Plate , Belgrano , Porteno . In 1915, the club achieved access to the first division, and already in 1916 the first classic with Estudiantes took place, in which Gimnasia turned out to be stronger - 1-0. In 1929, Gimnasia became the amateur champion of Argentina.

In the professional era, Khimnasiya flew 4 times to the Second Division (and became its champion 3 times), the last time - in 1979 . Since 1985, the club participates in the First Division of Argentina.

In 1993/94, the Argentine Football Association organized a tournament in honor of the 100th anniversary of the organization. Gimnasia beat Estudiantes in the first round 1-0 (goal scored by Guillermo Barros Skelotto ) and 0-0. In subsequent rounds, Gimnasia beat Newell's Old Boys , Argentinos Juniors and Belgrano from Cordoba . In the final match, the Metropolitan River Plate was beaten - 3: 1 (goals scored by Hugo Guerra, Fabio Fernandez and Guillermo Barros Skelotto). Guillermo Sanguinetti and Guillermo’s brother, Gustavo Barros Skelotto, were also among the team leaders.

In the 1990s and 2000s, the team took second place in the championship four times and repeatedly performed in the Libertadores Cup.

Stadium

In 2008, Estudiantes and Gimnasia began performing at the same stadium - the 5300th Ciudad de La Plata , but Gimnasia held a match at the end of the Aperture in the old arena, so the question of sharing the modern arena has not yet been resolved.
