Son of Giulio II Pignatelli , Prince di Noah, and Beatrice Carafa.
The Great Connaughtable and the Great Admiral of the Sicilian Kingdom , in 1687–1690, the Spanish Viceroy of Sardinia . In 1681 he was granted the title of Knight of the Golden Fleece .
During the War of the Spanish Succession, he was in the service of the Austrian Habsburgs.
During the war of the Fourth Alliance in 1719, he landed with Austrian troops in Sicily, where he became captain-general in Messina, recaptured from the Spaniards, and the first Austrian viceroy of the island. After the evacuation of Spanish troops in 1720, his power spread to all of Sicily (in fact, until the end of the war in Sicily, the Austrian commander General von Mercy ordered). On the night of June 5/6, 1720 he arrived in Palermo .
Not wanting to recognize the political traditions of Sicily, he came into conflict with the senators who were part of the island’s government - the “presiding junta” ( la giunta dei presidenti ), and in 1722 was dismissed by the Vienna court, dissatisfied with his actions.
