Biography
Takehisa was born in the village of Oku, Okayama Prefecture (now the city of Setouchi ). At the early stage of his life, he intended to become a poet, but realizing that he could not earn a living as a writer, he began to paint.
Takehisa never studied at any art school, formally had no teachers at all. He hated the notion of an “artist”, considering him overly pretentious, which upset many artists of his time and led to poor reviews from the so-called elite. Outside of artistic circles, Takehisa's work has gained great popularity among ordinary people, still having many ardent admirers in Japan and abroad.
Takehisa died in 1934 at the age of 49. His grave is located at the Dzoshigaya Cemetery in Tokyo's Ikebukuro District. The house in which he lived as a child was preserved and is now open to visitors.
