Development History
Palm OS has around 39 million devices manufactured since 1996 by Palm and others, including Handspring , Samsung , Lenovo , Aceeca , AlphaSmart , Fossil , Garmin , GSPDA , Kyocera , PiTech , Sony and Symbol.
An interesting feature of Palm OS is that the kernel of the OS licensed by Kadak [1] is multitasking , and for the OS user it is multitasking , albeit with the possibility of background music, MP3, etc. (in other words, it can be displayed simultaneously on the screen only one application). Moreover, the terms of the license agreement prohibit Palm from disclosing APIs to third-party developers for creating background tasks at the kernel level.
The most popular version is Palm OS Garnet (5.4.x), all modern Palm PDAs are built on this version.
Palm OS developers have created a Graffiti ( Handwriting Recognition ) system built on single-line shorthand.
For a long time, the release of Palm OS 6 Cobalt was expected, in which the developers were going to eliminate most of the problems inherent in the previous version, including planned multitasking, a redesigned graphical interface, support for high-resolution screens, etc. This version of the system was ready in 2004 and later even an updated version was released with the number 6.1, but, for an unknown reason, not a single serial device running Palm OS 6 Cobalt was released. Instead, PalmSource announced that the next version of Palm OS will be a graphical add-on on the Linux kernel ( Palm OS on Linux project), it also promised binary support for applications written for previous versions of the OS through an emulator.
In May 2005, PalmSource sold the Palm title to palmOne and became part of ACCESS . The new version of the system, based on the Linux kernel, should be called ALP ( Access Linux Platform ).
In December 2006, Palm Inc. (the new "old" name of the palmOne campaign) for $ 44 million acquired from ACCESS a perpetual license for the Palm OS 5.4 Garnet source code, allowing it to modify and use it in any of its products. However, Palm refused to license Access Linux Platform and began developing its own version of the operating system based on the Linux kernel. However, both companies said they would make every effort to maintain software compatibility with ACCESS.
At the end of January 2007, ACCESS announced the renaming of its Palm OS operating system into Garnet OS, and also introduced the new Access Powered logo, which replaced the Palm Powered logo used in a large number of mobile devices.
On January 8, 2009, at CES in Las Vegas , a new version of the Linux-based operating system was introduced, called Palm webOS , and the first smartphone to use this OS, Palm Pre (for the US market), was announced [2] .
As of January 2005 , the largest catalog of programs for Palm OS PalmGear contains 28,961 applications for this operating system. Programs for Palm OS can also be downloaded from Handango , CNET , PalmSource, Tucows . Russian-speaking users can use the Russian resources HPC , PDAload .
On February 11, 2009, at an investor conference, Ed Colligan noted that Palm will no longer release products based on Palm OS - the company's efforts will be focused on Palm webOS . [3]
