Biography

Born on August 7, 1900 in Voronezh.

He served in the Red Army since March 1918. Member of the Civil War in Russia.

He graduated from the 25th infantry command courses in Voronezh in 1920, then - a military school in 1928. In 1930 he graduated from rifle tactical courses to improve the command staff "Shot" and in 1937 - the Military Academy of the Red Army. M.V. Frunze. After studying at the academy, he was appointed chief of the 1st branch of the headquarters of the 3rd rifle corps . From December 1938 to May 1940, Matveev was on a special business trip to China and, upon returning to the USSR in August 1940, was appointed chief of staff of the 160th Infantry Division of the Moscow Military District.

A participant in the Great Patriotic War, with the beginning of which he left for the Western Front with a division as part of the 20th Rifle Corps . Since July 1941, the division participated in the battle of Smolensk, during which some of its units were surrounded. Upon leaving the encirclement, Lieutenant Colonel M.I. Matveev was appointed chief of staff of the 252nd Infantry Division , which conducted military operations in the Kalinin direction. Since December 1941 - the commander of the 162nd Infantry Division , formed in the Ural Military District. In April 1942 he departed with a division to the Southwestern Front. As part of the 38th army, the division participated in the Kharkov battle. In July of that year, the division, having suffered heavy losses, retreated to the Don, was disbanded, and Colonel Matveev was appointed commander of the 333rd Infantry Division , which in October 1942 became part of the 21st Army .

In the period from 08/02/1943 to 11/24/1943 M.I. Matveev commanded the 297th Infantry Division , and from 04/19/1944 to 05/09/1945 he was commander of the 92nd Guards Rifle Division .

He died in March 1972 [1] in Moscow. He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery. [2]
