Biography

Born in 1783 in Rouen , in the family of Charles-Louis Havas and Marie-Anne Belar, who were married in 1780. In addition to Charles-Louis, the family had 5 more children. Having received a good education, Havas in 1805 met a friend of the family Gabriel-Julien Uvrara and began to engage in trade with colonial goods with him. After the beginning of the Continental Blockade, Charles-Louis Gavas went to Lisbon to work as a correspondent with Durand-Guillaume de Roure. After Havas got rich on the supply of cotton, in 1808 he married de Ruhr's daughter Jeanne.

With the beginning of the Pyrenean War , the Havasov family was forced to return to Rouen. In 1811 they moved to Paris , where Charles-Louis was involved in government bonds and was a government creditor. However, after the departure of Napoleon , Havas could not get back his money and was on the verge of ruin. Then he decided to use his knowledge of foreign languages and began to make translations from European periodicals. He offered these reviews of the foreign press to the Paris periodicals. As a result, in 1832, the “Havas translation agency” first appeared, and then, in 1835, it was transformed into the “Havas” agency. The agency’s services were used by the influential Parisian newspapers Journal des débats , Le Constitutionnel , La Presse and Le Siècle . Later, Havas organized a wide network of European correspondents transmitting information from the host countries. In 1853, the heading "Communications of the Telegraph Agency" appeared in almost all Parisian daily newspapers, in which the information of the Havas agency was printed. It was Havas that first reported in September 1854 about the beginning of the Crimean War [3] .

After the death of Havas, the agency inherited his son Auguste. "Havas" existed until 1940, when it was closed by the Vichy regime . In 1944, France-Press news agency was created on the basis of “Gavasa” [4] .
