Perennial or annual plant with a height of 15 to 90 (150) cm. The leaves are connected in a basal rosette. Leaves up to 45 x 0.4 (-0.5) cm, semi-cylindrical, blue-green. The stem is leafless, hollow and branched, rarely simple. Six petals of 7.5-13.5 × 3-6 mm are white or pale pink with pink, green or brown veins. Capsules 4-5.5 mm, almost spherical. The flowering period lasts from March to May.
The species is common in North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia), Western Asia (Cyprus, Egypt - Sinai, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey), Southern Europe (countries of the former Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, France, Portugal [incl. Madeira], Gibraltar, Spain [incl. Canary Islands]). Naturalized in some other countries. Also cultivated. It grows on sandy soils.
