History

The grave of F. Karpinsky on a churchyard

In 1527, the future governor of Vitebsk and the elder Zhmudsky Maciej Klochko founded a wooden church in Lyskovo [3] , which was transferred in 1751 by the Volkovysk marshal Jan Bykhovets to missionary monks . In 1763 - 1785, they built a monastery on this site with a stone Trinity church in the Vilno baroque style . In 1818, a tower was attached to it. In 1841, the church became a parish church .

In 1866, in connection with the suppression of the uprising of 1863, it was rebuilt into the Orthodox Church and acquired the features of classicism (architect F. Afanasyev). On July 22, 1880, a shingle roof burned down from lightning, only the stone part remained [4] . In 1883 - 84, the architect P.I. Zolotarev carried out restoration: he built new arches, replaced the roof truss structures and roofing.

In 1921, during the Polish period , the church was returned to the Catholics.

In the 50s of the XX century it was badly destroyed. In 1960, it was officially closed; church utensils were transferred to the Ruzhany church [5] .

Near the church is the grave of the Polish poet and playwright Franciszek Karpinsky .

Architecture

Altar part

The style, time of construction and the region suggest that the palace architect Jan Sapel Jan Samuel Becker , a master of baroque classicism, took part in the construction of the church.

The church building consists of a high rectangular nave , an altar apse and side chapels , covered with cross vaults , almost square in plan. The tank wings of the transept and sacristy have cross vaults.

The tower on the main facade is four-tiered; does not have a single straight line in the plan. The cocks of the tower are reinforced with layered pilasters in combination with half columns and retaining elements in the form of volutes . The entablature divides it into a high lower part and upper tiers of a telescopic structure.

Narrow organ choirs are placed above the temple entrance. The main room of the church is the hall type. The interiors are decorated with pilasters of ionic and compositional orders, between which there are small arches. Above the arches are rectangular windows. The columns are decorated with marble. Fragments of monochrome painting using the grisaille technique survived in the interior of the northern chapel .
