Located in the northern part of the island, it was formed by a hydroelectric dam in 1961 on the Waikato River. Construction was carried out from 1956 to 1960. Two-thirds of the valley of geysers of Orakei Korako was flooded. The river flows into the southern part of the lake. In the northwestern part of the lake, it flows.

The area of ​​the mirror is 12 km². The length is about 5 kilometers.

It is a popular fishing spot for tourists.
