Criticism
The film premiered in 1984 at the Film Criticism Week ". [note 1] [3] In his review for The New York Times , film critic Vincent Canby noted Mireille Perrier's brilliant camera work and good play, but drew attention to the film’s secondary nature [4] :
Carax is 24 years old, but “The Boy Meets the Girl” is like a film by a talented 18-year-old director who still spends more time inside the “ French Blue Eyes ” than outside. ... In the film “The Boy Meets the Girl”, one can recognize the influence of Jean-Luc Godard , the other - Francois Truffaut , and everywhere - something like the timid voice of Carax himself, who is trying to be heard through other images created by others.
Original textMr. Carax is 24, but Boy Meets Girl looks like the work of a talented 18-year-old, someone who still spends more time inside the Cinémathèque Française than outside it. ... In Boy Meets Girl , one recognizes a bit of Jean-Luc Godard here, something of Francois Truffaut there, and every now and then one hears what may be the faint, original voice of Mr. Carax trying to make himself heard around and through the images of others.
Alex as the Director Ego
Many film critics note that Alex, played by Denis Laban, is a projection of Leos Carax himself [2] [5] [6] [7] . The director's real name is Alex Christoph Dupont. Denis Laban is only a year younger than Carax, and in the film Alex tells Mireille that he is engaged in cinema, describing the type of his occupation: “At the moment I come up with the names for the films I’ll shoot.”
