Boris (Ber) Ilyich Klein ( June 3, 1874 , Smorgon, Vilna Province - March 2, 1976 , Kiev ) - Soviet microbiologist, bacteriologist, doctor of medical sciences (1935), professor (1933). The author of valuable experimental works on electric currents in plants.

Biography
He graduated from the natural (1896) and medical (1901) faculties of Kiev University. In 1901 he was sent to the Pasteur Institute , where he collaborated with I. I. Mechnikov . Since 1901 he worked at the Kiev Bacteriological Institute (intermittently), where he headed the vaccines., Diagnostician., Serum., Smallpox and Pasteur departments; joint 1930-1938 - head. Department of Bacteriology 2nd Kiev Medical. Institute. Repeatedly he was on foreign scientific business trips, including in Berlin , Paris , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg . Since 1917 he was a member of the medical-sanitary commission of Kiev , promoted sanitary-hygienic knowledge among the population. In 1938-1948 - head. Department of Bacteriophagy, Institute of Microbiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (with a break). In 1942-1944 - head. anaerobic laboratory of the Kyrgyz Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Since 1948 - retired.
He suggested methods for the diagnosis of diphtheria, typhoid, paratyphoid bacteria, dysentery, cholera toxins. One of the first in the country to isolate the causative agent of dysentery , applied extracts of microbial cells - endotoxins for vaccination. He dealt with the problem of bacteriophages . Author of a number of monographs, including “Microparasitology and Immunodiagnostics” (1911, together with V.K. Vysokovich ).
He was one of the first in Russia who isolated the Grigoryev-Shiga stick , used antidysenteric serum, and extracts from the microbe. cells - endotoxins - for vaccination and obtaining specific sera.
He took part in the fight against plague ( Odessa , 1910), intestinal infections (1910-11), malaria ( Kiev province ), brucellosis ( Kyrgyzstan , 1942-43), etc.
