Dirge

The Funeral Song , op. 5 - written by I.F. Stravinsky in June-July 1908, impressed by the news of the death of his teacher - N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The first and only performance - January 17 (30), 1909, in St. Petersburg, under the direction of F. Blumenfeld.

Until September 3, 2015, the work was considered lost, but was found in the archives of the library of the St. Petersburg Conservatory [1] .

The funeral song belongs to the early stage of Stravinsky’s work, but at the same time it was written in the period preceding the sharp career rise of the composer when the score for the ballets Firebird , Petrushka and Sacred Spring were created for Diaghilev’s seasons .
