Biography
Born in the family of the famous paleontologist Moritz Guernes . Brother of Rudolph , geologist and paleontologist.
He graduated from the University of Vienna (1878) in classical philology and archeology with a Ph.D. After completing military service in 1885, he worked at the Museum of Natural History in Vienna.
Since 1892, a privat-docent, since 1899 a professor (ordinary since 1911), the founder of the department of the primitive history of man at the University of Vienna. Since 1913, a member of the Archaeological Institute. Since 1916, member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Engaged in archaeological practice in various parts of Austria-Hungary, especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He developed a typological method, in particular, he gave a classification of things of the Hallstatt cemetery.
The author of about 200 scientific works in the field of archeology and cultural history. The most important work “The history of primitive fine art in Europe from the time of its origin until 500 BC. e. "(" Urgeschichte der bildenden Kunst in Europa von den Aufängen bis um 500 vor Chr. ", 1898).
