The German Helmholtz Research Center ( Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren ) is the largest research organization in Germany. It unites 19 natural science, technical, and biomedical research centers with more than 39 thousand employees (including 14.7 thousand scientists). The official task of the association is to achieve long-term research goals of the state and society and to preserve and improve the foundations of human life. Research is concentrated in six areas of science and technology: energy; Earth and environmental sciences; the medicine; aeronautics, astronautics and transport; key technologies; structure of matter. The organization is named after the German physicist and physiologist Hermann von Helmholtz (1821–1894). The head office is in Berlin .

Budget and staff
The annual budget (2018) is 4.56 billion euros, of which approximately 70% is institutional funding from the state represented by the federal government and the governments of the federal states (in the ratio of 9: 1); the remaining 30% comes to the organization’s research centers from third parties, in particular in the form of grants and other types of competitive financing (from EU structures, etc.) [1] . The number of publications of employees of the Association. Helmholtz in leading scientific journals (indexed by ISI) composed 12 255 articles (2013) [3] . Every year, employees register 300-400 patents; technology transfer and cooperation with industry brings the Company about 150 million euros per year [1] .
