Payne, Elsie

Elsie Payne ( born Elsie Palmer Payne ; before marriage, Palmer, 1884 - 1971 ) is an American artist and illustrator [1] , wife of Edgar Payne [2] .

Biography

Born September 9, 1884 in San Antonio, Texas.

She later lived and worked in San Francisco , California , where she met artist Edgar Payne. In 1912, in Chicago , Illinois , they got married. Together they became quite famous in the artistic circles of the city. Elsie helped Edgar in his work on frescoes. In 1914, they had a daughter, Evelyn Payne Hatcher (1914-2009).

Artists traveled extensively throughout the United States . In 1918, they built their own house with a studio in Laguna Beach . In the years 1922-1924 they made an "artistic tour" to Europe. Upon returning to the United States in the fall of 1924, they again visited many places in the United States. Then they again visited Europe in 1928 and the next year they visited the Canadian province of Alberta . With the onset of financial collapse in 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression, difficult times began. The couple Payne returned to Southern California and purchased a home studio here in 1932. At this time, their daughter Evelyn got married, the relationship of Edgar and Elsie cooled off, and they broke up. Edgar moved and lived in Hollywood. After 14 years of separation, Elsie returned in 1946 to Edgar to help him, having learned that her husband had cancer. She remained with him until his death on April 8, 1947 . In 1952, Elsie created a bronze sculpture of Edgar, which is located in the Laguna Beach Museum of Art .

Elsie Payne continued her artistic activities while her health allowed. In 1959, with visual impairment, she ceased her creative activity, lived in Los Angeles . In 1969, she moved to her daughter's house in Minneapolis , Minnesota . She died here on June 17, 1971 . She was buried at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery City Cemetery . [3]
