Samit Basu ( Beng. সমিত বসু ; born December 14, 1979 ) is an Indian novelist, author of graphic novels, and screenwriter.

Basu is the author of the fantasy The Trilogy of Igromir, published by Penguin Books in India, and consists of three parts: The Saymokin Prophecies, The Secret of the Manticore, and The Revelation of Unwaba, as well as the youth novel Terror on the Titanic and the novel about superheroes "Turbulence", which takes place in India, Pakistan and England, and which was published abroad by Titan Books. Currently residing in Delhi , India. In July 2014, the novel Opposition, the sequel to Turbulence, was published abroad.

Biography

Samit Basu was born on December 14, 1979 in a family of Bengali Hindus. He grew up in Calcutta , where he first studied at the school of Don Bosco, and then at Calcutta District College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics. After leaving his studies at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, he later continued his education in TV and Radio Broadcasting and Film Documents at Westminster University in London.

Writer's career

Basu has been well-known in India since 2003, when Outlook magazine included him in the list of 16 Indians who achieved success before the age of 25. In 2007, along with other prominent young Indians, such as Rahul Gandhi and Vidya Balan , Basu was recognized as one of the “Most Promising Indians” according to a survey conducted by the Indian Bureau of Marketing Research, as well as the Indian magazine The Week .

Basu wrote his first novel, The Simokin Prophecies, at the age of 22 and published at 23. Originally English-language, the “Prophecies” were translated into Swedish and published by Ordbilder Publishing House, as well as into German (Piper Verlag Publishing House). The following volumes of the trilogy - “The Secret of the Manticore” and “The Revelations of Unwaba” were published in 2005 and 2007, respectively. The Igromir Trilogy received numerous positive reviews, and all of its parts were included in the bestseller lists in India. In 2010, Basu wrote the youth novel Terror on the Titanic, as well as Turbulence, a novel that, in the end, became his international breakthrough.

The publication in 2012 in the UK of the novel Turbulence [1] , the output of which was accompanied by a series of enthusiastic reviews, revealed the name of Samita Basu to the West. Wired magazine wrote: “Turbulence has it all at once ... Integrity of presentation, masterful development of images, humor, personal losses and great moments to think about them in every chapter.” The IGN website has launched a campaign for the film adaptation of this superhero novel in Hollywood . In addition, the book received the Wired magazine's Geekdad Goldenbot Award and ranked second in the list of new hot works in the science fiction section of Amazon.com for the first week after its release. Superheronovels.com called the novel a contender for the title of best superhero novel of all time.

Basu is also the author of comics. His first collaborative projects with the Virgin Comics comic book company were: Davy (Issues No. 3-No. 10) and Vishnu Sharma Tales based on the Panchatantra storyline. Together with Mike Carey, author of X-Men and Lucifer, Basu worked on the graphic novel The Untouchables, and continued to work on AnHoli, an episodic zombie comedy set in the vicinity of New Delhi. The closure of Virgin Comics prevented the publication of other projects with film director Terry Gilliam and pop group Duran Duran . In 2013, Basu published The Local Monsters, a comic book / fantasy about six immigrant monsters living in the same house in Delhi, and also participated in the creation of the 18 Days by Grant Morrison based on the plot of Mahabharata . Basu is a columnist, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, and freelance journalist who writes about travels, movies, books, and pop culture. He also has a blog, and was one of the first wave of popular Indian bloggers.
