History

The museum was designed as an integral part of the entire "Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature" (TMII) complex. Designed as a training center for Indonesian culture , " One Stop to Learn about Indonesia ."

The TMII complex was built in 1975 [2] under the auspices of Madame Tien Suharto. The Indonesian Museum opened on April 20, 1980 [3] [4] .

The museum is artfully decorated with Balinese statues and ornaments. The large Paduraksa and Candi Bentar (slit-like entrance portal) magnify the Balinese gates, several corner towers adorn the complex. The museum park took up the theme of the Indian epic “ Ramayana ”, for example, the bridge to the main building is made in the form of serpent-naga with an army of Vanaras - monkeys who built a bridge to Lanka .

The main building consists of three floors in accordance with the Balinese philosophy of Three hits of karana , a concept that distinguishes three aspects of complete human happiness: the development of harmony with God, surrounding people and nature.

Collections

The permanent exhibition and collections of the Indonesian Museum are arranged in three sections located on each of the three floors [5] .

Ground floor

The theme of the ground floor exhibition is “Unity in Diversity” (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika). Traditional formal wear and wedding costumes are presented here in 27 provinces of Indonesia (from 1975 to 2000, Indonesia had 27 provinces). The exhibition also shows Indonesian art forms, such as various types of dancing, vayang dolls and gamelan musical instruments, with a painted glass map of Indonesia. The exhibition reflects the rich diversity of the Indonesian people and their culture, glorifies the pluralism of Indonesia, formed from different languages, traditions, religions, cultures and customs of the Indonesians.

Second floor

The theme of the second floor of the exposition is “Man and the Environment” (Manusia dan Lingkungan). It is intended to demonstrate the interaction of the Indonesian people with nature and the environment. The exhibition presents various traditional houses, places of worship, rice barns, models of houses and residential premises. There are houses that were built on raised platforms, on trees or on the river, various styles of traditional native buildings.

Dioramas of parts of Indonesian traditional houses are also on display, in particular a wedding venue from Palembang , a Javanese living room and a Batak kitchen. The exposition presents objects used in everyday life: for hunting, gathering, agriculture. Ceremonies related to Indonesian lifestyles are also displayed, such as the Mitoni ceremony (seventh month of pregnancy), Turun Tanah (baby ceremony), Khitanan ( circumcision ), Mapedes (Balinese baby growing ceremony), Datuk (community leader inauguration ceremony), Pelaminan (wedding throne of the people of Minangkabau ).

Third floor

The theme of the third floor of the exposition is “Arts and Crafts” (Seni dan Kriya). It exhibits traditional and contemporary decorative and applied art of the Indonesian people: traditional textile crafts such as Songket, Tenun (weaving) and batik , as well as metal and wood products.

The intricate traditions of wood carving are presented on this floor, in particular those belonging to the cultures of Jepara (central Java), Bali, Toraji and Asmat . The most valuable item in this section is the huge Kalpavriksha wood carving , the tree of life. This tree is eight meters high and four meters wide symbolizes nature and the universe and contains five basic elements: air, water, wind, earth and fire. It completes all museum exhibitions.

The museum periodically displays temporary exhibitions dedicated to specific topics, such as topeng (traditional mask), traditional textiles, weapons, paintings, and also arts and crafts, such as batik or wyang dolls.

Other buildings in the museum complex - Balinese Park, Bale Panjang, Bale Bundar and Soko Tujuh - a building available for rent and for holding public or private events.
