Biography

Liu He was the eldest son of the Hunnic Shanuy Liu Yuan , who founded the state of Northern Han in 308; that same year, father gave Liu He the title of Liang-wang (梁王). In 310, his father declared him heir to the throne, and later in the same year he died.

Liu Yuan, shortly before his death, summoned his sons to the capital; Liu Cong commanded a regular army, but others also had their own military units. Three courtiers - Huan Yu (uncle Liu He), Liu Cheng (who had previously quarreled with Liu Tsun) and Liu Rui - began to whisper to the new emperor that it was unsafe to have military units near the capital, headed by such a popular commander as Liu Tsun (who remained according to the will of Liu Yuan the head of the army). Three days later, the new emperor ordered an attack on his four brothers: Liu Rui was supposed to attack Liu Chun, Huan Yu - Liu Yu, Liu Cheng - Liu Lun, and Tien Mi and Liu Gui - Liu Ai. However, Tien Mi and Liu Gui, instead of attacking Liu Ai, escorted him to Liu Tsong and told him what was happening; Liu Rui withdrew his troops. In the next two days, the troops of Liu Yu and Liu Moon were defeated, and they themselves were killed. Then Liu Cong besieged the palace, and exterminated the treacherous courtiers along with his brother emperor, after which he took the throne himself.
