Commission of the NKVD and the prosecutor of the USSR

The Commission of the NKVD and the Prosecutor of the USSR is an extrajudicial and, therefore, non-judicial [1] body that carried out mass political repressions in the USSR in 1937-1938. The commission consisted of two people: the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the USSR and the Prosecutor of the USSR (or their deputies). Also known as the “big two” or simply “two”. The Commission approved the "shooting lists" [2] .

The decisions of the commission were formalized in protocols-lists, which indicated the surname, name and patronymic, date and place of birth, citizenship and sentence (“shoot”). The Commission of the NKVD and the Prosecutor of the USSR issued decisions on the executions of tens of thousands of Soviet citizens. Only on December 29, 1937, the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs N. Yezhov and the USSR Prosecutor A. Vyshinsky , having examined the lists for 1000 people, were sentenced to death by 992 people. January 10, 1938 considered the lists for 1667 people, January 14 - for 1569 people, January 15 - for 1884 people, January 16 - for 1286 people, January 21 - for 2164 people [2] .
