- August 1 is the official date for the discovery of oxygen by the English chemist Joseph Priestley . In 1771, the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele received oxygen, but described his discovery in a book published only in 1777. For this reason, it is D. Priestley who is considered the discoverer of oxygen.
