Biography

Born June 29, 1883 in the town of Rainback in central Iowa . He studied at Iowa University , in 1904 he graduated with a bachelor's degree, then worked as an agent of the US Department of Agriculture and assistant to Joseph Charles Arthur at Purdue Agricultural Experimental Station. In 1907, Kern received a master's degree from Purdue University .

During a joint work with Arthur Kern began an in-depth study of the genus of rust fungi Gymnosporangium . Before him, in America, a taxonomy of this kind, after a series of works by Farlow and Thaxter in the years 1880-1891, was practically not occupied. In 1910, Kern moved to Columbia University of New York , in 1911 he defended his dissertation on hymnosorangium for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

From 1910, Kern worked as an instructor in crypto-botanical botany in Purdue, and from 1913, he headed the Department of Botany at Pennsylvania State College.

In 1924, Kern, Herbert Hayes Wetzel and Carlos Eugenio Chardon visited Puerto Rico. Through Chardon, Kern and Wetzel met with many Mycologists in Latin America, began to publish joint works on rust mushrooms in Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela.

In 1914, Kern was elected Vice President of the American Phytopathological Society, in 1945 - President of the Mycological Society of America. In 1926, the University of Puerto Rico awarded Kern an honorary doctorate. Kern was also a member of the Botanical Society of America .

Frank Dunn Kern passed away on September 28, 1973 at the age of 90.
