Legend
According to legend, the spirit of "Annie Palmer" haunts the inhabitants of the plantation "Palmyra" near Montego Bay. She says: Annie Palmer was born in Haiti , her mother was English, and her father was Irish. Annie spent most of her life in Haiti. When her parents died of yellow fever , her nanny, who taught her the voodoo rites , took up her upbringing. Annie moved to Jamaica and married John Palmer, owner of Rose Hall. Further, according to legend, she killed John and her two subsequent husbands and numerous slaves on the plantation, until she was killed by a slave named Taku.
Johnny Cash wrote a song based on a legend called “The Ballad of Annie Palmer” [1] .
In 2007, Benjamin Radford studied the legend and came to the conclusion that it was invented based on the famous on the island Herbert de Lisser novel “The White Witch of Rose Hall”, published in 1929 [2] [3] [4] . Annie Palmer may have really existed, but apparently did not have a penchant for sadism or debauchery. Journalist Polly Thomas writes that the name Annie Palmer may have been confused with Rosa Palmer, the real mistress of Rose Hall, who survived four husbands, but was famous for her virtue. [5]
