Origin
Lucius Mummiy belonged to the noble plebeian family Mummiev , whose representatives at that time had never reached the consulate [1] . According to the Capitol fasts , his father bore the same name - Lucius [2] .
Biography
The first mention of Lucius Mummies dates back to 187 BC. e., when he was a folk tribune [3] with his brother or cousin Quintus Mummy . At this time, a scandal erupted in Rome related to the “money of Antiochus ”: several prominent military leaders were accused of appropriating part of the indemnity received by them after the Syrian war . The Mummies opposed the proposal of the other two tribunes of the Petiliev brothers to entrust one of the praetors with an investigation into this money directed against Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus ; Lucius and Quint believed that the Senate should lead the investigation. But Marc Porcius Cato, who was behind the Petilia, made a speech in defense of their proposal and “with his influence kept the Mummiev stands from opposition” [4] [5] .
In 177 BC er Lucius Mummius became a praetor [6] and was given control of Sardinia , where at that time the tribes of Ileans and Balars rebelled against Rome. But he never went to the island: the Roman army in this war was headed by Consul Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus . On Lucius Mummy, it was entrusted with the duty to conduct an investigation in relation to those allies who did not obey the decree on the mandatory return from Rome to their hometowns [7] [5] .
The last time Lucius is mentioned in the sources in connection with the events of 146-145 years BC. e., when he was supposed to reach 70 years of age [5] . At this time, the Romans defeated the Achaean war , and Mummy, according to Zonara , included in the commission of ten legates who were to organize a new post-war order in Greece [8] . The Decemvirs dissolved all unions on the territory of Greece ( Achaean , Lokrid , Euboean , Fokey , Boeotian ); democratic constitutions in all cities were abolished; the Romans took measures to isolate individual communities (in particular, it was impossible to have property in several cities at the same time): those communities that fought with Rome were obliged to pay indemnities. Militarily, all of Greece was now subordinate to the Roman governor of Macedonia, and in fact became part of this province [9] .
Descendants
The sons of Lucius Mummy were Lucius , consul of 146 BC. er and the conqueror of Greece , who received the agnomen Achaicus for his victories, and Spurius , a friend of Publius Cornelius Scipio Emilian . His distant descendant on the female side was the emperor of Rome in 68-69 years. er Servius Sulpicius Galba .
