According to Carnegie’s classification of higher education institutions, Duchein is regarded as a university with high scientific activity [4] . The university has over 79,000 living graduates [1] , including two cardinals and the current bishop of Pittsburgh.
The university has its own student sports team - “Dukeain Dewks” - which is part of Division I of the National Association of University Sports . The men's basketball team of the university twice participated in the national championship in the 1950s, in 1955 it took the NIT championship.
History
The Pittsburgh College of the Holy Spirit was founded on October 1, 1878 by Father Joseph Strab and members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit who left Germany during the Cultural Camp [5] . The first set consisted of forty students, 6 teachers worked [6] . In 1882, the college received the status of a state educational institution [5] . Students were housed on a bakery located on Wiley Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. Nowadays, the university campus is located in the Blur district, where in 1885 the first campus building was built - the five-story Old Main, built of red brick and became the highest point in the then panorama of Pittsburgh [6] .
On May 27, 1911, the Pittsburgh College of the Holy Spirit was renamed the University of the Holy Spirit at Duchein (in honor of , Marquis du Cain, Governor of New France, who brought the Catholic faith to the Pittsburgh area) and became the only Holy Ghost University in the world . In 1913, the first woman graduated from the university - sister M. Fides, who became a sister of mercy . In 1914, graduate school was founded at Ducane University [7] .
The 1920s became especially favorable for a developing university. The campus continued to grow: in addition to Old Main, there is a specialized academic building, Kanevin Hall, as well as a gymnasium and a boiler room. In 1925, the faculty of pharmacology began teaching students, in 1926 the faculty of music, and in 1929 the pedagogical [7] . In 1928, Dukein University celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding and had an impressive trust fund. However, due to the Exchange crash of 1929, plans to expand the university, it was decided to postpone [7] .
In 1931, father Marcus Heir, at whom the university received university status, resigned as president and was replaced by father JJ Callahan [7] . Under the new president, numerous new training programs were added, the department for the unemployed was founded (nevertheless, it was soon closed), and in 1937 the faculty of nursing began training [7] . In addition, the university during this period made significant progress in the sports field - a victory over the football team of the University of Pittsburgh with a score of 6-0 was a triumph of Dukein University [7] . In 1940, the library of Dukein University began its work [7] .
During the Second World War, the university, whose president at that time was a young father, Raymond Kirk, was on the verge of decline. Compared to 1940, when the number of applicants amounted to more than 3,000 people, in 1944 only about a thousand were recruited [7] . As a result, the leadership of Dukein University was faced with numerous problems, the result of which was a sharp deterioration in the health of Father Kirk and his subsequent resignation, in 1946 he was replaced by the father Francis P. Smith [7] as president of the university. With the end of the war, a large number of war veterans came to the educational institution who decided to get higher education. In 1949, student enrollment reached a record high of 5,500 (the number of applicants to the Faculty of Business Administration was 2,000 [7] ) and Father Smith, due to problems with accommodating so many people, decides to use the and redeem three military barracks that related to decommissioned military equipment. The university campus was also completely refurbished and the first student radio station, [7], was .
In 1952, Father Vernon F. Gallagher proposed an ambitious plan to expand the campus. At that time, the president was the father of Henry J. McAnalty and he gave the green light to its implementation. As a result, in 1954, the first student dormitory was opened, and in November 1958, Rockwell Hall, which housed students of the faculty of business administration and the law faculty. Between 1959 and 1980, other buildings were built that gradually formed the campus infrastructure. Among them are the College Hall, the building of the Faculty of Music, the library, Student Union and Melon Hall, as well as four dormitories. Despite this, in 1970 the university was on the verge of closure. However, the students decided to rally and raise a million dollars to “save Ducane University.” They managed to raise only $ 600,000, but this was enough to keep the university afloat until 1973, when the crisis finally ended [8] .
In the 1980s, when President Donald S. Nesti was president, the campus was expanded again - now it also included the AJ Palembo Center. In 1988, Dr. John E. Murray replaced Nesti’s father as president, and the Law School was built under his presidency. Between 1988 and 2001, the formation of a modern campus infrastructure began [9] , and also, for the first time in 50 years, three new faculties began to work - medical, natural and biological sciences, as well as the faculty of leadership and professional qualities [10] [11] . By 2012, the Power Center, the multifunctional complex on Forbes Avenue and the new hostel became part of the campus [12] .
University Symbols
Coat of arms and seal
The design of the coat of arms and seal of Duchein University was developed on the basis of the family coat of arms of the Marquis du Cain, in whose honor the institution received its name. A red book was added to the drawing in the hands of a lion, so that the coat of arms looked more like the symbols of the university. This type of coat of arms and seal was proposed by a member of the congregation of the Holy Spirit and a graduate of the university, father John F. Melloy, after which the design was slightly revised by the heraldic artist Pierre de Chenion la Rosa. In 1923, the image of the coat of arms of the university was officially approved and sculpted at the top of Kanevin Hall, then under construction [13] .
The drawing of the coat of arms and seal is as follows: in the center there is a shield divided into two parts - at the bottom there is a black lion holding a red book in its paws, and in the top there is a dove with a halo flying on a blue-red background; on both sides the shield frames the university motto in Latin, and around there is a ring with the Latin name of the university ( lat. Universitas Spiritus Sancti Duquesnensis ) [14] .
Anthem
Joseph Carl Braille, a 1888 graduate who became known as a composer who writes film music, became the author of music for the university’s official anthem. The words were written by father John F. Melloy, who is also the author of the coat of arms of Duchein University. The anthem was first performed in 1920 [15] .
- Alma Mater, old Duquesne, guide and friend of our youthful days.
- We, thy sons and daughters all, our loyal voices raise.
- The hours we spent at thy Mother knee and drank of wisdom's store
- Shall e'er in mem'ry treasured be, tho 'we roam the whole world o'er.
- Then forward ever, dear Alma Mater, o'er our hearts unrivaled reign.
- Onward ever, old Alma Mater! All hail to thee, Duquesne!
- We, thy sons and daughters all, our loyal voices raise.
Graduate Ring
Ducane University alumni rings were first used in the 1920s, the same decade as the coat of arms and anthem were formally adopted. The initial design of the ring, approved by the student committee, was “an octagonal dark blue stone held by four triangular teeth” [16] . Two years later, the dark blue stone was replaced with a synthetic ruby, and in 1936 a solid metal rim appeared instead of the teeth, on which the words "Dukein", "University" and "Pittsburgh" were engraved. On the ring itself, one could notice a drawing similar to the emblem of the university. In the late 1930s, the standard engraving on the ring was the letter “D”, written in Gothic. According to the official website of Dukein alumni, “the golden initial, a small pebble and an octagonal cut allows us to distinguish the ring of a Dukein graduate from the rings of graduates of other colleges and universities” [16] .
Campuses
Main
Initially, the main campus of Dukein University, located on Boyds Hill (Blur district in Pittsburgh), occupied only 12.5 acres (50.590 m 2 ), currently its area is about 50 acres (198.300 m 2 ) [17] . Of the 31 buildings that make up this campus, several are either recent buildings or renovations - the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Rangos Hall), two recording studios, two garages, a multi-purpose entertainment center (Power Center) and a theater residential complex (Bayer- Hall).
The first building of the campus is considered the Old Main administrative building. It is built in the Gothic style of the Victorian era, inside there are offices of the university leadership. Kanevin Hall, which is the campus's oldest residential building, was named after Pittsburgh Bishop Regis Kanevin and built in 1922 - it has since been repaired twice (in 1968 and in 2009). These two buildings, as well as Bayer Hall, the Richard King Mellon Hall Science Building, Laval House, and Student Union, are located at the western end of Academic Walk, making it possible to get to most of the campus only on foot. The main focus of student life is the Student Union, which houses assembly halls, student canteens, Sturbucks café, PNC branch (provides financial services), as well as an entertainment center and art gallery [18] . In the northern part is the Humberg library built in 1978, which includes an extensive collection of publications in print and electronic formats.
Building Forbes Avenue and Fifth Avenue
The newest building on Dukein University’s main campus, the Power Center (named after the first president of the university, the father of William Patrick Power), is located on Forbes Avenue, between Chatham Square and Maggie Street; This building houses most of the gymnasiums and gyms on campus. There is also a bookstore, several cafes, a restaurant, a conference room and a dance floor [19] . This 125,000 square foot (11,000 m2) building was the first campus to be visited by both university students and residents of surrounding areas [11] [20] . In October 2010, it was announced that Dukein University was acquiring an eight-story building with an area of 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) located on Fifth Avenue; this building turned out to be the Pittsburgh RMU Center, previously owned by Robert Morris University. Ducane University management plans to use this building to increase the number of seats by 1,100, as well as provide the institution with a large number of music facilities - since 2005, the number of applications for admission has actually doubled. In addition, the university already owned four buildings on Fifth Avenue, next to the Kansel Energy Center, where some of the student basketball team's games, Dukeane Dewkes, are held. University-owned radio stations - WDUQ, NPR and Jazz - have moved to new offices in Cooper Building and Clement Hall.
Capital Region
Until 2009, another campus was located in the town of Wormlisburg, near Pittsburgh. It was mainly inhabited by students of the Faculty of Leadership and Professional Qualities [21] [22] .
Italian
In 2001, the leadership of Dukein University launched the Italian campus program. As a result of this program, an Italian campus appeared, run by Nazareth sisters and located west of the center of Rome , outside the Vatican [23] . “A walled area with gardens and walkways, [c] classrooms and access to computer facilities (including the Internet), there is a small library, a relaxation area and modern living rooms with double rooms, each equipped with a private bathroom” [24] .
The curriculum of the Italian campus provides for the study of history, art history, Italian, philosophy, theology, sociology and economics in accordance with the historical and cultural features of Rome. The teaching staff for the most part consists of invited and temporary teachers, some of them are well-known professors of the American campus [25] .
Campus Structure
About 10,000 students study at Dukein University [1] . Over the period of its existence, the university campus has grown significantly and currently includes the buildings of 10 colleges and schools (faculties), which study bachelors, graduate students and doctors of science and operate 189 scientific programs. This is the only university of the Holy Spirit in the world [1] , students from eighty different countries study in it [2] .
