History
Colonial Period
The original building of the Aceh Museum was formed in the style of traditional provincial houses - platforms (Rumokh Aceh province) [1] . These buildings were first used as Aceh Pavilions in the lands of De Koloniale Tentoonsteling (Colonial Exhibitions) in Semarang from August 13 to November 15, 1914 . At first it was assumed that the platform house would be dismantled and moved to the Netherlands , but it was left and a museum was created.
Aceh artifacts were presented in the pavilion, most of which are a private collection of the ethnographer Frederich Stameshaus, who in 1915 became the first curator of the Aceh Museum. During this exhibition, Aceh Pavilion was able to become the best pavilion. Due to this success, Stameshaus suggested the civil and military governor of Aceh return the pavilion to Aceh and use it as a museum. The building was returned to Koeteraji (the present Banda-Aceh) in Aceh, and from August 31, 1915, it was officially opened on the grounds of Koeteraji by the first curator of the museum Stameshaus. Stameshaus remained the curator of the museum until 1933 . [2]
After his resignation, Stameshaus sold his own collection, which totaled 1,300 ethnographic objects to the Colonial Institute in Amsterdam, now known as the Tropical Museum. His collection included many brightly lit Aceh artifacts, including gold jewelry, Aceh weapons, amulets, photographs, and everyday dishes. The most famous object sold to the Tropical Museum was Teuku Umar's own cloak.
Independent Period
After Indonesia gained independence, the museum became the property of the Aceh Regional Governorate. In 1969, under the initiative of Teuku Bendahar, the Aceg Museum was moved from its old location (Blang Padang) to its current location in Jalan Sultan Alaidin Mahmudsyan. The area of ββthe museum is 10,800 square meters.
In 1974, the museum received its own foundation for its restoration. This fund was used to restore the original buildings - pavilions and to build new buildings of the museum complex. These new buildings consisted of exhibition rooms, conference rooms, laboratories and offices. This fund also provided new collections for the museum and related research.
On September 1, 1980, the Aceh Museum officially opened a provincial museum under the name Aceh State Museum (Indonesian Negeri Aceh Museum). The official opening of the museum was held by the Minister of Education and Culture of that time, Dr. Daoed Yoesoef. The historic Rumokh Aceh survived the earthquake and tsunami in 2004.
Rumokh Aceh
Rumokh Aceh is a typical Achehz traditional house - a platform in the construction of which used wood as the main resource. The house has three rooms: the front room (Ruang Depan), the middle room (Tungai) and the back room (Seuramo Likot). [1] The middle room is about 50 to 75 centimeters higher than the back and front rooms.
Collections
The original collections of the Aceh Museum were preserved thanks to the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam, one of the most famous is the Teuku Umar's own cloak.
Today, the museum collects archaeological objects, flora and fauna from Aceh, ethnographic objects, old manuscripts, stones and minerals from the region, Acehz pottery, coins and seals of the Kingdom of Aceh, as well as historical paintings. [2]
