Biography
At the age of 18 he became a deacon, served in the clergy of the Patriarchate of Alexandria [2] . As a priest, he graduated from the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens [3] .
September 1, 1899 in the Patriarchal Church of Constantinople was ordained a bishop of Tripoli with the elevation to the rank of Metropolitan. The ordination was performed by Metropolitan Constantine of Constantine (Isaacidis) , Metropolitan Constantius of Selivia (Zachariadis) and Metropolitan of Constantine and Kozan (Matulopoulos) [3] .
From September 4, 1925 to May 20, 1926 he was the locum tenens of the Patriarchal See of Alexandria [4] .
In 1927 he was appointed the Great Patriarchal Epitope of the Patriarchate of Alexandria [3] .
From August 4, 1935 to February 11, 1936 for the second time he was the locum tenens of the Patriarchal See of Alexandria [4] .
From March 3 to June 21, 1939 for the third time he was the locum tenens of the Patriarchal See of Alexandria [4] .
As noted in his obituary, “always performed his high duties with great prudence and great skill. In the fight against tyrants [Italians] by patriots from the Dodecanese Islands who lived in Egypt, the unforgettable Metropolitan was always an ardent defender and valuable adviser. For all these services to the [Greek] Nation and Orthodoxy, Metropolitan Theophanes was awarded many awards ” [2] .
Donated his personal library to the funds of the Alexandria Patriarchal Library [5] .
He died on January 27, 1954 in Alexandria [3] after a long illness. The funeral service in the Patriarchal Church of Alexandria was performed by Patriarch of Alexandria Christopher II [2] .
