Scientific activity
The early studies of L. A. Wenger, based on the ideas of his teacher A. V. Zaporozhets, are devoted to the study of perception, from its development in infancy to adulthood [2], [3]. These studies formed the basis of the doctoral dissertation "The development of perception and sensory education in preschool age" (1968).
The next area of research by L. A. Wenger and his laboratory was the creation of the first domestic test system for preschoolers, carefully standardized on a representative sample. Its specificity is determined by relying on the concept of L. S. Vygotsky, according to which the degree of mastery of culturally-historically developed psychological means is considered as an indicator of mental development [4].
A significant scientific achievement of L. A. Wenger was the theory of formation of cognitive abilities (sensory and intellectual) that he developed. According to her, the basis of cognitive abilities is the handling of generalized images (sensory standards and visual models), reflecting the connections and relationships between objects. It is formed due to the "modeling" types of activity specific to preschool age: game, designing, drawing, modeling, application [5].
Under the leadership of L. A. Wenger, mental development programs “Development” and “Gifted Child” were created, which are used in kindergartens in many cities of Russia. The specificity of these programs is to teach preschoolers to use and independently build a variety of schemes, drawings, plans, etc. Thanks to this, children form the corresponding figurative representations with which they can operate “in the mind”. Thus, purposeful guidance of the development of cognitive abilities is carried out. Many tasks from these programs are adapted for use in preschool institutions of other countries (USA, England, Spain) [6], [7], [8].
In the mainstream of the scientific school of L. A. Wenger, several doctoral dissertations were completed, and 48 candidate dissertations were defended under his direct supervision. He is widely known abroad, his works have been translated into German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech and Japanese. L. A. Wenger made a great contribution to the development of Cuban psychology [9] (during the year he lived and worked in Cuba, and later continued the scientific management of the work of Cuban psychologists).
