Biography
Born July 30, 1874 in the city of Charlestown in Mayo County, Ireland. He received his secondary education at St. Nati College in the village of Ballahaderrin in the county of Roscommon . He studied philosophy and theology at St. Patrick's College in Mainut . On November 30, 1897, at the age of 24, he accepted priestly ordination to serve in the Diocese of Ahonri [1] , after which he taught at his native St. Nati College. Thanks to his efforts, the college has become one of the most famous secondary educational institutions in Ireland. June 22, 1904 was elected by the Council of Irish Bishops as Rector of the College of Ireland in Salamanca, Spain [2] . He headed this college for seven years, after which his brother Denis became the successor to the post of rector. Under the leadership of Michael James O'Doherty, the College of Ireland restored its former fame in Spain, for which the Spanish king Alfonso XIII awarded him the knighthood.
On April 10, 1910, Pope Pius X established the diocese of Zamboanga and on June 19, 1911 appointed him first bishop of Michael James O'Doherty. On September 3, 1911, he was ordained a bishop by the Archbishop of Tuam, John Haley, in conjunction with the Bishop of Galway, Kilmakdua and Kilphenora Thomas O'Dee and the Bishop of Elfin John Joseph Clancy.
On September 6, 1916, Pope Benedict XV appointed him Archbishop of Manila. As archbishop, he founded the Catholic Education Association of the Philippines (CEAP), the Manila Cathedral School and the local branch of the Mary Legion . In 1937, he led the organization of the International Eucharistic Congress in Manila. During the Japanese occupation, he helped the needy. Constantly controlled by the Japanese occupation authorities.
In 1911, published in Ireland a collection of articles "Articles on Spanish Catholicism and Society, Irish Ecclesiastical Record".
He died on October 13, 1949 and was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Manila.
