History

The first written mention of the village of Bilovice dates from 1306 , but the area was settled much earlier. The Jerotins and Liechtenstein were the most important landowners in the history of the village. In the XVI century, a group of Gutterites (in the Czech Republic called Gaban) settled in the area. They cultivated grapes and built many large wineries [3] . At the beginning of the 20th century, many villagers emigrated to Argentina , Canada and the USA [3] . Since 2001, Velke Bilovice is a city.

Attractions

  • Gaban (Gutterite) wine cellars - the largest of them was built around 1614 and is located near the Velky Bilovec pond in the direction of the village Cejkovice. The current owner is Habánské Sklepy [4] .
  • City Museum - the exhibition presents local folk costumes, many archaeological finds from the area, old agricultural tools and other items related to the history of the city [5] .
  • The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque church of the 18th century .

The city boasts more than 650 wine cellars [6] , located on 40 respective cellar streets [7] and more than 730 hectares of vineyards (the largest area in the Czech Republic) [8] .

Culture and festivals

  • “Years” (Holidays) is the largest national holiday in Velk Bilovice. It begins on the first Sunday after the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God (September 8), patroness of the local church, and lasts until Tuesday. The main part of the holiday takes place on Sunday, when many visitors even come from afar to admire the folk costume parade with more than 50 costumed couples. In 2017, the celebration is scheduled for September 10, 11 and 12 [9] .
  • From cellar to cellar is a traditional holiday, during which more than 50 local wineries open their cellars to visitors in one day. A bus service between all cellars and evening entertainment are organized. Held on Saturday at the turn of March and April. In 2017, the celebration is scheduled for April 1 [10] .
