Bedarida, Henry

Henri Bedarida ( French Henri Bédarida ; March 9, 1887 , Lyon - December 22, 1957 , Paris ) - French historian and Italian philologist.

He participated in the First World War as part of the French Expeditionary Force in Italy. After the war he taught French at the University of Bologna and Italian language and literature at the French institutes in Florence and Naples. In 1927 he defended his doctoral dissertation " Parma and France from 1748 to 1789." ( French Parme et la France de 1748 à 1789 ), published as a monograph in 1977 in Geneva and in 1985 (in Italian translation ) in Milan. Since 1929, professor at the University of Lyon . In 1935 he was succeeded by Henry Oveta at the Department of Italian Studies at the Sorbonne University , later for some time was his dean. He headed the magazine Revue des études italiennes. During the Second World War he participated in the Catholic Resistance , in 1941 he became the first president of the underground Catholic Center of French Intellectuals .

He published the books “French Influence in Italy in the 18th Century” ( Fr. L'influence française en Italie au XVIIIe siècle ; 1933, together with Paul Hazard ), “ Theophile Gauthier and Italy” (1934), “Contemporary Italian novel on the history of Italy 1789 —1914 ”( Fr. Le roman italien témoin de l'histoire de l'Italie de 1789 à 1914 ; 1952) and the final collection of articles“ Through three centuries of Italian literature ”( Fr. A travers trois siècles de littérature italienne ; 1957 ) He translated from Italian into French the “History of Modern Italy” and “The History of Europe in the 19th Century” by Benedetto Croce and the novel by Francesco Perry "Unknown student." The son of Bedarida Francois Bedarida (1916–2001) and stepdaughter Rene Bedarida (1919–2015) also became historians.
