Biography
Came from an old Cossack family. He was born on January 31 ( February 12 ), 1839 , in the village of Panskoe, Zolotonoshsky Uyezd (now this territory is flooded by the waters of the Kremenchug reservoir).
Early orphaned, earned clerical service in various institutions. In 1882-1892 he lived and worked in the statistics department of the Poltava provincial zemstvo. Prone to observing ethnographic differences in the economic customs of the population, he introduced many valuable definitions of household economic terms into the works of the Poltava Zemsky Statistical Bureau.
From individual personal works of Vasilenko, his studies of handicrafts , especially weaving , of individual settlements of the Poltava province, are issued.
V. I. Vasilenko is one of the authors of the " Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary " in which he posted a number of articles on the geography of his native land.
Having retired, he handed over his own collection of books to the Poltava Public Library.
He died on March 24 ( April 6 ), 1914 in the village of Beliki, Kobelyak district , where he lived after leaving service.
