Biography
In 1784, for the bas-relief "Joseph Sold by His Brothers" he received a big prize from the Paris Academy of Arts and went to Rome as his pensioner, where he diligently studied antique art and, together with Druet, wrote sketches from nature. Upon his return to Paris in 1789, he received the title attributed to the academy, in 1805 became its full member and shortly thereafter a professor. His first significant work, the bas-relief “The Warrior Dying for the Fatherland” (located under the peristyle of the Paris Pantheon ), was quickly followed one after another by his works executed in the spirit of antique plastic: a statue of Napoleon I , which is striking in similarity (in the building of the legislative building; repetition - in the Berlin Museum), relief “Poetry” (in the courtyard of the Louvre ), the group “The Shepherd Revives the Oedipus Baby Tied to a Tree” (in the Louvre Museum ), the statue of Cincinnatus (in the Senate Hall), numerous portrait busts and other e. But the most attractive works of Chode should be recognized as a statue of a young girl with a mimosa flower in her hands (in the Louvre Museum) and the group “Cypress mourns her deer killed by Orestes” (in the music conservatory).
