Biography

Young years and education

John Michael Evans was born on August 16, 1957 in Toronto ( Ontario , Canada ) [1] . Michael has a twin brother, Mark , born with him on the same day [2] . President of the University of Toronto John Robert Evans and his wife Gay Glasso raised six children - Derek, Gillian, Will, Tim, Michael and Mark [3] [4] .

Michael graduated with Mark. [1] In 1981, he graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in politics [5] . From 1982 to 1984, Evans studied at University College at Oxford University [6] [7] , who graduated with a master's degree in international relations [8] .

Sports career

Evans joined Canada at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in ninth place in the competition. At the World Championships in 1979, he took seventh place in competitions in . Together with his brother, he participated in competitions in double boats at the World Championships in 1981 and 1983 , where they took sixth and fifth places, respectively [1] . In 1983 and 1984, Michael and Mark joined the Oxford team, which defeated Cambridge in the " boat race " [1] [9] [10] .

In 1984, he won a gold medal in rowing at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with a , including his brother Mark [7] . Having won Canada's first Olympic gold in rowing in eight-boats, they covered a distance of 2,000 meters in 5 minutes 41.32 seconds [11] [12] , ahead of the US team by 0.4 seconds [1] .

For his Olympic services, Evans became a member (1985) [12] and (2003) [13] .

Career in Business

In 1993, Evans joined Goldman Sachs from , heading the London Capital Markets Division, and in 1994 became a partner [14] [15] [16] . In 2001, Evans was appointed Head of Global Equity Markets, and then became Co-Head of Securities Operations. In 2004, he became chairman of Goldman Sachs Asia in Hong Kong [14] , where he helped many of the largest Chinese companies enter the US markets [15] . In 2008, he became vice chairman of Goldman Sachs [16] , and in the same year he became one of the leaders of Goldman Sachs who decided to abandon their bonuses [14] . In 2011, Evans was appointed as the head of an investment bank for operations in emerging markets, owning 673,031 ordinary shares worth $ 110 million [14] [17] . He was also a member of the Management Committee and the Standards Committee on Doing Business with Goldman Sachs Clients [6]

In 2014, after a 21-year career, Evans resigned from Goldman Sachs, becoming a member of the independent board of directors of the Alibaba Group [15] , having been familiar with the founder of the company, Jack Ma , for more than ten years [16] . In 2015, Evans was appointed President of the Alibaba Group, becoming responsible for managing and implementing the strategy of international growth, globalization and business development outside of China, with mandatory reporting on the results of work to the CEO of the company Daniel Chang [5] [16] [18] [19] .

Personal life

In 1986, Evans married Heather Richards, a graduate of Princeton University. [8]

Evans is currently married to Norwegian Lisa Evans, a native of Bergen , a former model who holds a master's degree in English education Columbia University , a philanthropist and director of , an independent school in Harlem [27] [28] [29] [30] .

The family has nine children - three from each of the previous marriages, two common and one adopted child [28] [31] . Living in an apartment with six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, measuring 750 square meters and costing $ 27 million, occupying an entire floor in 995 on Fifth Avenue overlooking Central Park , opposite the Upper East Side Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York [ 31] [32] [33] .
