Edition History

By the beginning of the 1990s, Henrik Baran believed that the studies of Velimir Khlebnikov, which he was actively involved in in the 1970s and 1980s, had been exhausted for him. But in the 1990s there were greater opportunities for archival research, new publications of Khlebnikov’s texts, interest in readers and researchers increased in Khlebnikov, and Baran continued his biscuit studies [1] .

Articles and notes from this and the beginning of the next decade also made up the book “About Khlebnikov. Contexts, Sources, Myths ”, published in 2002. Almost all of them were published earlier, but during the preparation of the publication they were partially edited again. Editing almost did not affect their original appearance and related mainly to the unification of the apparatus and stylistic editing. Nevertheless, due to the rapid development of bakery science, the author had to reconsider some of the conclusions, and he supplied almost all of his work with postscripts, sometimes polemical, and in some cases proposed alternative solutions to the questions posed by the research [2] .

The title of the book “migrated” to the subtitle “Context, sources, myths” published a year earlier in the magazine “ New Literary Review ” of Baran’s article “Egypt in the works of Velimir Khlebnikov: context, sources, myths” [3] . Entering the book itself, the article itself lost this subtitle, becoming one of the chapters entitled “Egypt in the Works of Velimir Khlebnikov” [4] . In the preface to the book, Baran explained its subtitle:

The amazing versatility of Khlebnikov’s work <...> forces the researcher to self-restraint in the choice of “approaches” (the term of the young R. Jacobson ), forcing him to focus on a certain issue. In my case, these problems are indicated in the title of the book — questions about the contexts , wide or narrow, of Khlebnikov’s poetic world, about the sources of his images, motives and characters, the nature of the myths he creates are posed to a greater or lesser extent in each article [1] .

Henrik Baran's collection “About Khlebnikov. Contexts, sources, myths ”was published by the Russian State University for the Humanities with a circulation of 2000 copies.

Impact

Interpretation of Khlebnikov’s novel “ Ka ” in the work of Henrik Baran “Egypt in Khlebnikov's work: context, sources, myths” (2001), reprinted with postscript in the book “About Khlebnikov ...”, was the basis for Lada Panova with her own interpretation in the article “„ Ka “Khlebnikova: the plot as a life creation” [5] .

The chapter of the book was devoted to the solar myth - one of the main motives of Khlebnikov’s work. The appeal to solstice was for Khlebnikov in the general vein of his installation on folk traditions, mythology, antiquity. Khlebnikov’s heroes challenge the Sun and defeat it. IA Shadrikhina extrapolated this provision of the book of Baran to the entire Russian avant-garde (primarily to the opera Victory over the Sun ) and Vladimir Mayakovsky in connection with his suicide in the context of the solar myth [6] .
