Biography

Mikhail Semenovich Volkov was born into a working class family in the city of Balakovo, Samara province (currently the Saratov region). Received primary education. He worked as a tractor driver on a collective farm in the village of Natalino .

In October 1942, the Balakovo district military enlistment office was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . Since 1942, on the fronts of World War II . Member of the defense of Leningrad .

In the battle for the Yamm station ( Gdovsky district, Pskov region ) on February 7, 1944, Sergeant Volkov fired direct guns at the enemy and destroyed 4 firing points, as well as scattering enemy soldiers to the company trying to counterattack the Red Army units. His gun helped rifle units to move forward and inflicted well-aimed attacks on firing points and manpower of the enemy. By order of the 90th Infantry Division of February 27, 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.

In the battles to break through the defense of the enemy’s defense line in the area of ​​the village of Meriküla in Estonia on September 17, 1944, Sergeant Volkov with his gun was moving all the time in infantry battle formations. Despite the strong artillery and mortar fire of the enemy, he conducted a destructive fire at the firing points and manpower of the enemy. Direct fire, thanks to its accurate operation, destroyed 3 enemy bunkers. At the time of the enemy’s counterattack at the critical moment of the battle, when the enemy infantry with automatic fire wedged out the location of the rifle units, Volkov fired direct fire from his gun, not paying attention to the heavy shelling from the enemy’s side, destroyed 27 enemy soldiers and officers, which created a turning point during counterattack the enemy and drove him away. In addition, he also assisted in the evacuation of fifth fighters from the battlefield. By order of the troops of the 2nd shock army of October 9, 1944, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree.

During the breakthrough of the enemy’s defense in the area of ​​the village of Dzerzhanovo (7.5 km south of the city of Makuv Mazowiecki ) on January 14, 1945, Sergeant Volkov, using direct fire from his gun, accurately destroyed one of the enemy’s anti-tank guns and 2 machine guns. At the same time, 11 enemy soldiers were destroyed. With further advancement of the infantry forward, moving in battle formations, the fire of its guns contributed to its advancement. When repulsing an enemy counterattack in the vicinity of the village of Charnostow on January 15, 1945, when 4 Tiger tanks were moving into the Red Army, Sergeant Volkov, acting courageously and courageously, knocked out one of the enemy tanks and put the others to flight. Thanks to this, the infantry rose and successfully repulsed the enemy’s counterattack. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st degree.

Sergeant Volkov was demobilized in March 1945, returned to his homeland. Since March 1945 he lived in the village of Novopolovodino . He worked as a tractor driver at the Zorkinsky state farm. Then he lived in the city of Balakovo, worked as a mechanic for a fleet at a poultry farm.

In 1985, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Victory, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree .

Mikhail Semenovich Volkov died on August 26, 1988.
