In the first half of December 1924, units of the Saudi army under the command of Emir Najd Ibn Saud inflicted a substantial defeat on King Hejaz Ali ibn Hussein near Mecca , as a result of which the latter was forced to retreat to the Jeddah area. On his orders, all the military personnel under his command immediately began construction of fortifications and the installation of landmines. At the request of Ali, his brothers Abdullah and Faisal , who at that time were the emir of Transjordan and the king of Iraq, respectively, were provided with additional troops and weapons. He also bought 5 aircraft from the Kingdom of Italy and several tanks from the Weimar Republic , since he had only 2 outdated aircraft at his disposal, through which it was not possible to conduct full-fledged military operations.

In any case, Ali could not repel the attacks of the Saudis for a long period of time, since even the tribes living in the Jeddah region had pro-Saudi sentiments. It was not possible to instantly get military personnel and weapons: the speed of their movement from Aqaba was rather low. Moreover, during the defense of the city, the pilot of one of the two aircraft was killed, which further complicated the situation. In the end, the elders decided to surrender the Jeddah. Ali ibn Hussein, boarding the ship, fled to Baghdad . On December 17, 1925 , or in 1343 after the Hijra , Jeddah surrendered.

Ibn Saud took the title of King Hijaz, and a year later included him in the Nejd.
