Command
Until 1975, the king of Sweden was formally the commander of the Swedish army. In 1937, the post and headquarters of the “Army Chief” ( Swedish chefen för armén , CA ) were introduced to command the army in peacetime. After a significant reorganization of the army in 1994, this headquarters ceased to exist as an independent organization, and instead it was introduced the post of "chief of staff of the army" ( Swedish chefen för arméledningen ).
In 1998, a new reorganization was carried out, as a result of which most of the duties of the army chief of staff were transferred to the newly formed post of "Inspector General of the Army" ( Swedish generalinspektören för armén ). Similar positions of inspector general are also available in the navy ( Swedish generalinspektören för marinen ) and in the air force ( Swedish generalinspektören för flygvapnet ).

- ¹ Although Sweden is not a member of NATO, the ranks are transferred from the official publication of the Swedish Armed Forces [3] .
- ² Since June 1, 2000 the title of “Colonel of the first stage” ( Swedish Överste av första graden ) has not been awarded.
- ³ Cadets (in Swedish Kadett ) formally are sergeants. Therefore, they are often called chevron sergeants ( Swede. Vinkelsergeanter ) because of the chevrons (squares) on their shoulder straps.

- 1 Sweden is not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The translations to British Army ranks have been taken taken from an official Swedish Armed Forces publication [3] and NATO rank codes have been extrapolated from those the British Army assigns to the equivalent rank.
- ² No permanent appointments to these ranks are currently made. Officers already appointed retain their rank and temporary appointments are made for international missions.
³ Instead of rank insignia, privates wear the insignia of their branch (armor, infantry etc) on the left collar of the battle dress uniform (BDU). All personnel, regardless of rank wear the branch insignia on the right collar. Lance-Corporal and above wear their respective rank insignia on the left collar. (See picture to the right)
