For the first time, the family was singled out in 1893 by the American zoologist Arnold Eduard Ortman , which was considered in its composition by the only genus - Cheiragonus (later the name is recognized as a younger synonym for Telmessus ) [3] . From the 1920s to the 1970s, representatives of this family were considered as part of the Atelecyclidae family [3] [4] . The restoration of the group in the family rank was made in 1977 by the French carcinologist Daniel Gino [3] . The reason for this was the structure of the larvae, unusual for crabs, and the overlapping of the female's genital openings with cephalothorax sternite [3] .
