Bunyatyan, Grachiya Khachaturovich

Grachiy Khachaturovich Bunatyan ( Buniyatyan ; May 1, 1907 , Novo-Bayazet Armenia - March 19, 1981 , Yerevan , Armenian SSR , USSR ) - Soviet and Armenian biochemist, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1943), its vice-president (1961-1967). In 1942–1946 - rector of Yerevan University .

Biography

Grachia Bunatyan was born on May 1, 1907 in Novo-Bayazet. In 1930 he graduated from Yerevan University . From 1930 to 1960, he worked at the Yerevan Medical Institute (from 1937 to 1960, professor and head of the department of biochemistry), at the same time rector of Yerevan University and head of the biochemistry sector of the Institute of Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (from 1943 to 1961). From 1947 to 1957 - Academician-Secretary of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, and from 1961 to 1981 Director of the Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.

He died on March 19, 1981 in Yerevan.

Scientific Works

The main scientific studies are devoted to functional biochemistry of the brain.

  • He studied the formation of ammonia from amino acids.
  • He discovered a new nicotinamide coenzyme and studied its role in metabolic processes.
  • Showed the role of y-aminobutyric acid in the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids.
  • Discovered in the brain of new copper-containing proteins.

  • Member of the German Academy of Naturalists "Leopoldina" (1972-81).
  • Member IBRO .
  • Member of the Council of the International Biochemical Union (1975-81).
  • Chairman of the Armenian Society of Biochemists (1975-81).

Awards

  • The Order of Lenin (05.13.1977) - for his great services in the development of biological sciences, the training of scientific personnel, and in connection with the seventieth birthday.
  • Order of the October Revolution (1971).
  • Two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor (4/11/1944, 1957).
  • Honored Scientist of the Armenian SSR.
