NPCIL was established in September 1987 as part of the government "to implement the design, construction, operation and maintenance of nuclear power plants for the production of electricity in accordance with the plans and programs of the Government of India to ensure the Atomic Energy Act of 1962." The head of the corporation is K. K. Purohit. All nuclear power plants operated by the corporation are certified according to ISO 14001 ( Environmental Management System).

NPCIL was the only organization responsible for the construction and commercial operation of Indian nuclear power plants until the advent of Bhavini in October 2003. The corporation operates 21 nuclear reactors at 7 sites with a total installed capacity of 5780 MW. [4] [5] Subsequently, when government decisions allowed private companies to engage in nuclear energy, NPCIL faced the problem of luring its specialists into private companies. [6]
