Will (neuroscience)

Volya ( English volition ) - a multi-valued term denoting certain higher cognitive processes or functions associated with the control of behavior. Adina Roskies ( English Adina L. Roskies ) identifies several meanings of the term “will”: will as initiating an action, will as intention, will as decision making, will as executive control, will as feeling (emotional state) [1] . Marcel Brass and his colleagues believe that this is a term that is difficult to define, but one can characterize the will through concepts such as motivation and cognitive control [2] . Patrick Haggard, in a 2008 review article on the subject of will in neuroscience, writes that the topic of will was previously avoided and unscientific for neuroscience (later in an article written in conjunction with Hackwan Lau, he says that “volition is coming of age as a scientific topic ”(the will has matured as a scientific topic) [3] ), however, in new studies it has become possible to localize the areas of the brain responsible for what are called volitional acts; including such as the pre-complementary motor cortex (pre-SMA), the anterior prefrontal cortex , and the parietal cortex [4] . Previously, Jing Zhu wrote that the areas responsible for the will are partially the anterior cingulate cortex , the additional motor region , and some parts of the prefrontal cortex [5] .
