History
It was founded in 1994. Originally, as the University of Technology in Vlore ( Universitet Teknologjik i Vlorës ). It bears the name of Ismail Kemali (1844-1919), the leader of the Albanian national movement, the founder and first head of state of Albania.
Structure
The teaching staff is about 200 people, of which 24 have the title of professor. The current rector is economist, professor Albert Kwari.
The number of students is about 10,000. By the number of students, it is one of the three largest universities in Albania.
Currently, it consists of four faculties:
- Faculty of Engineering Sciences ( Fakulteti i Shkencave dhe Inxhinierisë )
- Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (Fakulteti i Shkencave Shoqërore dhe Edukimit )
- Faculty of Economics and Law ( Fakulteti i Ekonomisë dhe Drejtesise )
- Faculty of Medicine ( Fakulteti i Mjekesise )
In February 1997, university students went on a hunger strike in connection with the worsening social situation in the country. On February 23, about 5,000 people marched in solidarity with protesting students in the center of Vlore.
