Sylvester Turner ( born Sylvester Turner , born September 27, 1954 , Houston ) is an American politician and lawyer , member of the Texas House of Representatives (1989-2016), mayor of Houston since 2016. Member of the Democratic Party .

Biography
Turner was born on September 27, 1954 in the district of Houston ( Texas , USA ) [1] . His mother worked as a maid at , and his father as a private artist [1] . In the Turner family, in addition to Sylvester, there were 8 more children [1] . In 1973 he graduated [1] [2] . In 1977, Turner received a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Houston , and in 1980 received a Ph.D. after studying at Harvard Law School [1] [2] [3] .
After completing his studies at Harvard Law School, Turner began working at the law firm [1] [2] . Three years later, in 1983 he created his own law firm Barnes & Turner, dealing with corporate and commercial law [1] [2] , which he continues to work at the present time [2] . Turner also owns the American Title consulting firm [2] .

Political Activities
In 1984, Turner unsuccessfully ran for the post of Commissioner of Harris County [1] . In 1988, as a result of the election, he became a member of the Texas House of Representatives from the 139th district (north of Houston) [1] [3] , where ethnic minorities live mainly [1] . Turner subsequently 13 times (from 1990 to 2014) was re-elected a member of the House [4] . During this time, he twice unsuccessfully participated in the mayoral election of Houston - in and [1] , but won on the third attempt, receiving 50.96% of the vote in the elections in 2015 in the second round [5] .

In the House of Representatives, Turner served as vice chairman of the budget appropriation committee, member of the budget legislative council, chairman of the subcommittee on public administration, the judiciary, public safety and criminal justice [3] . He was also the representative of a group of blacks in the House and the representative of the legislative delegation of Greater Houston [3] . On January 1, 2016, Turner resigned as a member of the House of Representatives in connection with his election as mayor of Houston in December 2015. [6]

Personal life
From 1983 to 1991 he was married to Cheryl Turner [9] , according to some reports, the reason for the divorce was Sylvester's homosexual relations, but in 2015, Cheryl denied this information [10] [11] . Cheryl Turner, a former Harris County prosecutor, was sentenced in 2006 to 10 years in prison for stealing $ 143,000 from the trust fund of a private organization, Houston family [9] . Married daughter Ashley Page Turner was born [9] . Ashley graduated from and graduate school [3] , and now runs a nonprofit medical clinic. [2]
Turner is a member of the Brookhollow Baptist Church [1] . Prefers to spend a vacation in the South African region [1] .
