Free- style wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1924 Olympic Light Heavyweight Championship (up to 87 kilograms) were held in Paris from July 11 to July 14, 1924 at the Winter Velodrome .
28 athletes from 12 countries entered the competition; participants from two countries were declared absent, 16 people participated in the tournament (no more than two participants from one country). The youngest participant was Fabio del Genovese (21 years old), the oldest Marcel Capellier (41 years old). Competitions were held according to the Bergwal system .
The competition in this weight was extremely high. The competition was attended by Karl Westergren , champion of the 1920 Greco-Roman middleweight champion and already winning the gold medal in these light heavyweight Greco-Roman wrestling games, Rudolf Svensson , silver medalist of the World Championships 1921 and 1922 in Greco-Roman Roman wrestling and silver medalist of these Greco-Roman wrestling games, Charles Kuran , silver medalist of 1920 freestyle wrestling games in this weight class, Poul Hansen bronze medalist of 1920 Greco-Roman wrestling games in heavyweight.
However, the gold medal was won by an unknown American John Spellman , who won against Westergren in the semifinals and against Svensson in the finals. In the tournament for second place, Svensson took revenge against Westergren for the defeat in the final of the Greco-Roman wrestling competitions and became the silver medalist of the games. In the tournament for third place, all athletes who had the right to participate refused to fight, with the exception of Charles Kuran , who was awarded a bronze award.
