Biography
Born May 10, 1925 in the Comanesti commune in the family of a miner.
From the age of 12, due to the difficult situation of the family, he worked as a miner.
Member of the RCP since 1945.
He graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Economics.
In 1954-1956, he was the first secretary of the regional committee of the Romanian Workers' Party in the Hunedoara County, then - deputy head of the organizational department of the Central Committee of the RRS.
A candidate member of the Central Committee of the RRS (1955-1960), a member of the Central Committee of the RCP (1960-1989), in March-July 1960, in 1974-1978 and in 1982-1984 - Secretary of the Central Committee of the RCP. In 1977, Nicolae Ceausescu sent him to regulate the mining operations in the Jiu Valley, but Verdec did not cope with the task and was even held hostage for two days.
Member of the Executive Committee and Permanent Presidium of the Central Committee of the RCP (1966-1977), member of the Permanent Presidium of the Political Executive Committee of the Central Committee (1977-1989).
In 1965-1967 he was a deputy, in 1967-1974 he was the first deputy prime minister of the Socialist Republic of Romania.
In 1978-1979 - First Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the State Planning Commission.
From 1979 to 1982 - Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Romania. Trying to bring the country's economy out of a protracted crisis, he came into conflict with Nicolae Ceausescu and was forced to resign as head of government.
From 1985 to 1986 - Minister of Coal Industry of Romania.
From 1986 to 1989 - Chairman of the Central Committee of the RCP to study the history of the RCP since 1961.
After the overthrow, Ceausescu tried to form a new government, but it was not recognized by anyone and lasted less than an hour, until the announcement on television about the creation of the National Salvation Front . In 1990 , he founded the Socialist Labor Party ( Partidul Socialist al Muncii ), in which the patriarch of Romanian politics, the former general secretary of the Central Committee of the RCP and the critic Ceausescu “left” George Apostol also participated. The party received a small number of votes in the 1992 elections , but later did not enter the parliament. For some time she was in a bloc with the nationalist Great Romania . After the 2000 elections, Verdets was removed from the post of leader of the SPT, and in 2003 the party was dissolved: most of it joined the Social Democrats , an unhappy minority formed the Party of the Socialist Alliance .
Died of a heart attack. He was buried in Bucharest at the Gencha cemetery .
Personal life
Regina's wife was the sister of the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu . In the marriage, two daughters were born - Dorin and Cesarin.
