The 19th Women's World Curling Championship (1997 Ford World Curling Championships ) was held in Bern ( Switzerland ) from April 12 to 20, 1997. Switzerland hosted the women's world championship for the 3rd time. The tournament was held for the first time in Bern. At the same time, the men's world championship was also held there.

The tournament was attended by seven European women's teams that participated in the 1996 European Championships , as well as teams from Canada , the USA and Japan .
The world team became (for the 10th time in its history) the Canadian national team , defeating the Norwegian national team with a score of 8: 4 in the final. The third place went to the Danish team , who won the match for the 3rd place in the Japanese national team with a score of 7: 6. [one]

Competition Format
First, all teams participate in the group stage, in which each team will play once with each. The four best teams go to the playoff semi -finals , the winners of which will play in the final, and the losers in the match for third place.
