Chilo is an ancient Greek politician and poet.
Biography
Lacedaemon ; in the 55th Olympiad ( 556/5 BC ) it became an efor ; significantly increased ephorate. Some researchers believe that it is he who belongs to many of the standards of life of Sparta , attributed to Lycurgus . Chilon owns elegiac verses in two hundred lines.
He died a deep old man, greeting his son after his Olympic victory in fist fight.
Sayings
Distinguished by laconicism. Diogenes Laertius quotes several of his wise sayings: “Hold your tongue, especially in a feast”, “Don’t blaspheme the dead”, “Celebrate marriage without splendor”, “When you say, don’t wave your hands, it’s a sign of madness” ...
The most important was the expression “Know thyself”
Posthumous glory among the Hellenes brought him a prophecy about the island of Kiefer , located near the shores of Laconia . Acquainted with what he is, Chilo exclaimed: “It would be better for him not to arise or to arise, to drown!” Chilon’s fears were far from groundless: later, during the Peloponnesian war , Niceus captured this island and set up an Athenian garrison there. From this island the Athenians caused great damage to the Spartans.
