Botanical Description
Perennial herbaceous plant from 20 to 80 cm high.
The leaves have a length of 9-40 cm and a width of 2 to 29 cm.
Inflorescences are from 15 to 40 cm. The bedspread is from 11 to 38 cm long, inside is white, outside is whitish-green. Male flowers are yellow to bloom. The flowering period lasts from March to May.
Berries 2.2-13 × 1.5-10, red, bright. From one to four seeds per berry, 2.2-6 × 2.5-5 mm, ovate.
Distribution and habitat
The species is distributed in North Africa (northern Algeria , northern Morocco , northern Tunisia ), in Western Asia ( Turkey ), in the Caucasus ( Armenia , Georgia , Russia - Ciscaucasia ), in Europe ( Great Britain , southern Switzerland , Ukraine , Albania , Bulgaria , countries the former Yugoslavia , Greece (including Crete ), Italy (including Sardinia and Sicily ), Crimea , France (including Corsica ), Portugal (including Madeira ), Gibraltar , Spain (including the Balearic and Canary Islands ]).
Inhabits moist soils, outskirts of villages, gardens, rocks, shady walls and altered [ unknown term ] forests up to 1720 m above sea level .
Cultivated since 1683.
