He studied in Essen , then studied performance on historical musical instruments in the Salzburg Mozarteum with Nikolaus Arnoncourt . He teaches at the Hamburg Graduate School of Music and Theater .

Since the 1990s Darmstadt is actively performing as an arpeggio performer - a peculiar bow instrument of the early 19th century. Especially for him, a modern copy of the arpeggio was made. Darmstadt recorded an arpeggio music album, including the famous Schubert sonata - the only notorious composition written specifically for this instrument, as well as arrangements made by the first arpeggioist Vincenz Schuster and Darmstadt himself.
