Biography

The eldest son of the publisher Ilya Ivanovich Glazunov , brother of Konstantin (1828–1914) and Alexander (1829–1896), grandson of Ivan Petrovich Glazunov on the paternal line. He was educated at a private pension and at the Second St. Petersburg Gymnasium (up to the sixth grade) [1] .

Already in 1841, he was engaged in the book business of his father, and after his death in 1849, he continued to work under the father’s firm, first with two younger brothers, and from 1854 with one average. The first time, until 1856, was very unfavorable for the book trade and book printing, but at the end of the Crimean campaign and especially in the 1860s, a revival came [1] .

From 1849 to 1882, the Glazunov firm, under the direction of Ivan Ilyich, produced 205 editions, of which more than half came from textbooks; At this time, in particular, the following were published: “The History of Russian Literature” by A. D. Galakhov , the 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th volumes of the “History of Russia” by S. M. Solovyov , the works of such scholars and teachers like Vostokov, Bychkov, Vodovozov, Kaidanov, Kyuner , Simashko, Ushinsky, Filonov [1] .

In the 1860s, a collection of works by Russian writers of the 18th and early 19th centuries, edited by P.A. Efremov , was published and the works of Kantemir , Fonvizin , V.I. Maykov , Lukin and Yelchaninov were published. The company also acquired the right to publish the works of Lermontov , Zhukovsky, Turgenev , Goncharov and Ostrovsky and published them [1] .

Since 1865, the Golovins' publishing house has published several comprehensive catalogs of its book trade, compiled by P. A. Efremov and V. I. Mezhov . In 1882, the centenary of the company's existence was celebrated, and on this occasion, the “Brief Overview of the Book Trade and Publishing Activities of the Glazunovs for a hundred years 1782–1882 was published. SPb. 1883 "(reissued in 1903), not marketed. The firm was a commissioner of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences , the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church , the Department of the Ministry of Public Education and the Ministry of State Property of the Russian Empire [1] .

In addition to the trading business, I. I. Glazunov was also engaged in social activities. In 1853-1854 He was a member of the St. Petersburg City Deputy Assembly, in 1857-1861. - Member of the St. Petersburg City Duma; after the transformation of the city government was elected to public, he was a member of the city commissions: school, sanitary, for the construction of the Alexander II bridge and hospital barracks, for military service, was a representative of the Duma during the transfer of hospitals and alms-houses to the municipal government meeting (1875), during the cholera epidemic was in charge of the infectious diseases hospital. At the same time, he was a deputy from the merchants at the State Bank, a member of the Council of Commerce and Manufactories (since 1872), a director of the urban credit society (since 1861), an honorary member of the council of a commercial school (since 1861), a director of a house of mercy [2 ] (since 1866) [1] .

For his activities, he was awarded the Orders of St. Stanislav of the 3rd (1863) and 2nd (1875) degrees and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree (1866). On August 30, 1870, Glazunov was granted the Order of Saint Vladimir of the 3rd Degree with the assignment of the rights of hereditary nobility to the diversified social activity, and by decree of March 4, 1876, the coat of arms elected by him was approved (in the gold field the scarlet neck with silver eyes and tongue, rubbing with 2 black matzas, i.e. pillows for rubbing printing inks) [1] .

From 1881 to 1885, Glazunov was the mayor of St. Petersburg [1] .

On December 25, 1881, he was promoted to actual state councilor , in 1882 he was awarded the Order of Saint Stanislav of the 1st degree, and in 1883 - the Order of Saint Anna of the 1st degree. Service left already in the rank of secret adviser [1] .

In 1885, he was re-elected to the vowels, but he did not run for office [1] .

Soon he was brought to trial in the case of riots in the credit society and was forced to stop his social activities. At the end of 1888, the court chamber withdrew from him and his comrades in managing the affairs of the credit company the suspicion of any unfair and unlawful actions, but Glazunov was no longer a member of the public duma of the city council for the new term (1889-1893) [1] .

Ivan Ilyich Glazunov died on December 19 (31), 1889 and was buried in the Trinity Sergius Desert [1] .
